Overview

The Department of Electrical Engineering is committed to a vision of leadership that promotes the integration of use-inspired research with locally and globally relevant academic programs. It has achieved national recognition in electrical engineering scholarship by defining new areas of study and pursuing the highest quality activities in research, training, and entrepreneurship. Undergraduates in the program prepare for entry-level positions as electrical engineers in industrial, commercial and government organizations. This ABET-accredited program also provides a fundamental preparation for those interested in graduate studies. Graduate students may seek master’s and Ph.D. programs intended to provide deeper understanding of the field through research, development, design, systems, engineering management, teaching or other professional activities.

Rresearch programs in the department reflect the diversity of the profession and range from the very small (nano-scale electronic devices and their modeling), to the very large (the U.S. electric power grid and its control). Some programs offer students theoretic approaches for the design of communication systems, while others include the implementation of wireless communications devices such as the circuits in cell phones. Graduate students are involved in all of our research activities and have access to state-of-the-art facilities such as the electromagnetic anechoic chamber, the wireless communications lab, and the integrated circuit fabrication clean-room. Our faculty includes experts in many application areas such as the design of flight control for aircraft and the implementation of neural interfaces for biomedical applications.
